The principle of positive mental attitude is powerful and it produces amazing results to those who apply it.
My last post was based on how one could control one’s thoughts especially as a Christian.
The thought of any man determines how far he goes. You can never rise above your knowledge.
The scripture says “Out of the abundance of the heart/mind the mouth speaks”. If you are full of rubbish, you’ll speak rubbish. If you are full of wisdom, your words will express wisdom.
This brings us to today’s topic; there is a strong link between your thoughts and your speech, especially the ones you say to yourself.
You can’t give what you don’t have. You can’t confess what you didn’t first conceive; be it unconsciously or consciously.
“From the fruit of his mouth, a man eats what is good…” (Proverbs 13:12)
Since your thought and your words are interlinked. Another title for this blog entry would be “Why you need to think positively".
What you sow, you shall reap; some people call it the 'law of attraction". If you conceive negative thoughts, you attract negative circumstances. If you speak positive words, you attract positive responses.
Remember the story I told you about how I fell down the stairs? It only happened because i kept on playing it in my head.
You need to speak positive words because:
#1. It’s Contagious
Let’s take an example from the bible. The children of Israel after years of sojourning were at the verge of possessing the land God promised them. Moses, by God’s instruction sent spies to inspect the land of Canaan. Out of each tribe, he chose a leader (chief) to represent and they were twelve spies in all.
Their mission was to bring report of the land inhabitants, topography, the richness and fertility state of the land and they were to bring some fruit of the land as proof.
In a long run, ten of them brought an evil report to Moses and the people. When some of the people heard this, they were afraid and began to confess negative words; they grumbled, murmured, cried and even blamed God for bringing them out of Egypt to die (that’s what they thought).
The amazing part was that the other two spies (Caleb & Joshua) saw possibilities and confessed it. They refused to enslave themselves with what they saw in the land of Canaan.
Ten of the spies admitted that the land was fruitful and beautiful but they also limited both themselves and some of the people of Israel by saying “The people who dwell in the land are strong…. We are not able to go up against the people for they are stronger than we… We were like grasshoppers in our sight, and so we were in their sight).” (You can read this account in Numbers 13 and 14)
You never know how much your words can influence people around you, especially if you are in the position of leadership. The people concluded in their mind that if majority of our chiefs can accept defeat, who are we to say otherwise.
The people of Israel were split into two. Those who believed in the negative counsel, and those who believed in Joshua and Caleb song of victory.
The sad part was that the ten spies and the people who grumbled became victims of their own words. They died in the wilderness as God commanded. But Joshua and Caleb and the rest of the Israelites survived and gained victory into the land of Canaan.
Be careful of what you say. It might bring about another person’s destruction or it might just be what will influence someone to greatness.
#2. It makes you
I always like to establish a link between your thoughts, your speech and what you become.
“For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (proverbs 23:7)
“… For out of the abundance of the heart (mind) the mouth speaks.” (Matthew 12:34b)
During the apartheid regime in South Africa, Nelson Mandela despite all the challenges he faced would always say “One day, I’ll be the president of this country”. You know the rest of the story.
What you think about to the extent that you can’t hold it down anymore, you will speak out. Then your subconscious mind will work with it and that’s what you become gradually.
I have colleagues who say words like “I’m just an average person, I’m not trying to be smart, I like the way I live, etc.” The reality is that I don’t see them grow above that standard they had imposed on themselves. It’s very heart breaking.
As much as God is interested about what you say about yourself, so also does Satan. The universe works with what you want. Life will always give you what you demand. So, do not settle for less.
A great poet has correctly stated this universe truth through these lines:
“I bargained with life for a penny,
And life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening,
When I counted my scanty store.
“For life is a just employer
He gives you what you ask
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
“I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn dismayed,
That any wage I had asked for in life,
Life would have willingly paid.”
You can try saying this words to yourself with a strong believe every day;
“I am worthy of excellence, joy, good success, distinction, because I have the mind of Christ. I enjoy total success in all I do. I have the Holy Spirit. I do the unusual, I tap into endless possibilities. I’m getting better and better every day.
#3. It’s God’s will
“…let the weak say, I am strong”(Joel 3:6)
If there is anything God wants more, it is that you should understand who you are and live by it. What the devil does is this; he sets in delusion in your mind and make you belief that you are not worthy of any good thing.
What do you say to yourself? It does not matter what anybody may say, what matters is what God hears from you; it will determine your future. This was what happened to the Israelites who grumbled.
God desires that the fruit of your lips should always be good words.
By God’s inspiration, Paul wrote:
“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how you ought to answer every man.” (Colossians 4:6)
One major attribute of salt is that It adds tastes to foods. Salts could also be used for preservatives.
Use your mouth to add spice to your life, preserve it and not destroy it.
Finally Ephesians 4:29
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
Your speech should be used for building up. Anytime your mouth brings forth negative words, you are denying it of its purpose.
There’s no way you will utter a word and you won’t be a benefactor. If you are deaf, your mind is not. So, watch it.
#4. It’s not self-deception
“Let’s face reality, I’m awful with calculations.” That’s what I keep hearing from most people. Would it not be preferable to say “let’s face reality, I can get better with calculations.”
Confessing positive words is not deception but an act of faith. The conventional thing is that “to believe is to see” but for Christians it is “to see is to believe”
I would like to sound it that you don’t say “I want to make a million dollar” and sit home all day or you say “I’m the best student in my department” and all you do is eat, watch movies and sleep.
You have to make conscious effort to achieve that which you have said
Your confession will only be a deception if you fail to act upon it. Remember, faith without work Is dead.
The last thing the devil wants from you is for you to keep a positive mindset.
Why not surprise and defeat him by refusing to settle for less. You are special.
You have been bought with a price.
You are not ordinary. Therefore, you deserve the best.
