Video: Is Social media making you (anti)social?

WARNING!! Do Not Resist This Post! :)

social media, social networks, anit-social

That's the question of the century. I would rather ask a personalised question than the normal "Is social media making us antisocial?" I would not want to make the mistake of generalising.

The Ugly side of Social Media

Have you become a slave to the technology you mastered? Do you have a control over the use of your phone or any other gadget? Can you say "no" when you receive a notification when working?

Are you addicted to your smartphone? Have you lost track of reality?

There are so many more questions to examine oneself. You have so many "friends" on all your social media accounts but yet you are lonely. The moment you have a low battery, and your phone shuts down, your world is placed on hold.

You put up big smiles, do some editing to exaggerate the moments but deep down you are lost.

The only time you smile is when you are having a BBM chat but you neglect the issues in your family by holding on to the world in your phone.

You barely have a good relationship with your parents and siblings while you enjoy being a twitter celeb.

You reply pings in the middle of your quiet time. You choose Linda Ikeji blog (no offence) over your bible study time.

You take quick peep into your twitter timeline during your study time and you end up not studying.

All you think of is how to take a new picture to post on instagram. Your life is no longer yours and you don't know.

Well, you can choose to ignore all these things. My writings are really not for everybody :)

Sometime last year, I wrote a guest post about smartphone addiction symptoms (Go diagnose yourself).

The guilt is on majority. I have had my own fair share some of this experience. I was having my daily reflections and I recalled being in a bus with my friends on two different times this month and we were more into our phones than having normal conversation.

So I'm asking this question again. Is Social media making you antisocial?

I found a video that will quite interest you. It's was made by Gary Turk, an award winning film maker.

You can also see the transcript.

Flipping the coin-  Technology (Social Media) is Awesome!

Since Chimamanda Adichie taught me about single stories, I would also consider the awesome part of social media.

First, this blog would never have existed and all my thoughts will just be on paper and probably the only persons that will be reading them would be my family and friends.

Thanks to the amazing search engines, I can locate any content of my choice on the Internet using some specific keywords on google.

Businesses are being expanded through these media. Employment issues can be resolved. You can start making money online via various means. Some people don't know that Facebook and twitter can be their money making machines.

With Skype, you are set for a meeting. Everything is just one click away. I feel like I have the whole world in my pocket.

I redesigned my blog and even made it mobile responsive through series of tutorials online which i got through google.

There are a lot of positive benefits to the social networking sites and others.

See this parody video that opposes the one Gary Turk did. Talking about striking a balance.

Social Media 101- Strike a balance

The greatest harm comes from the best intentions.
This will remain one of my favourite quotes. This tools are meant to make us more productive but to some persons, it's the otherwise.

You and I must learn to strike a balance. Learn to say no when you have to. If you are a blogger or a business owner, have a social media marketing plan.

If you are just a regular user, you should have a social media schedule plan. Whatever method you want to adopt, make sure you really have control over what you do.

Do not try to be someone else on the social networks. Be unique.

Learn to hang out the old way. Do not neglect the things that are truly important because of your gadgets.

Three tools to manage your social media account

There are a lot of tools that makes it easy to manage your social accounts better but I will just mention three.

  1. Hootsuite
Monitor your most used social networks on one dashboard. You can also schedule posts ahead of time. I can assure you of it's effectiveness. I use it.

     2. Buffer app
It's just like hootsuite with a more simple layout. I also use it too schedule my post. So when I'm offline, I don't get to worry about my account being inactive.

      3. Everypost

You can schedule and publish the same content all over your social accounts at the same time. Talk about productivity, you don't need to copy and paste on several pages.

It's your turn to write

What do you think about the post and the videos? How do you manage your social accounts? Are you an addict?  Let's rub minds together. Use the comment form below.

I guess its social media era and everyone is like compelled to use it or habituated to use it. Or its very hard to avoid social media sites.
