Adeola Olayemi: LIVING ABOVE THE DANGERS OF A SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE

A sedentary lifestyle is a type of lifestyle with little or no physical activity. A person living a sedentary lifestyle is often sitting or lying, while reading or using a mobile phone/ computer for much of the day. A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to many preventable causes of death.

The world has so much revolved that people could sit all day receiving emails, calls and using the computer. Several jobs today involves this kind of lifestyle except it has to with walking up and down.

A lack of physical activity is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical activity can contribute to or be a risk factor for:

  • Anxiety
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Migraines
  • Computer vision syndrome (only for computerised and fresh depression)
  • High blood pressure

WHAT ARE THE WAYS OUT?

You practically do not have to stop your work to prevent sedentary lifestyle. So the solution to the dangers involved in a sedentary lifestyle includes the following:

  • Try as much to walk at least one hour a day, this can be done either by working out at a gym or through jogging. I understand that you have a busy schedule and you hardly walk for barely 15 minutes without a means of transportation. Exercises has mood boosting benefits, most people who live a sedentary lifestyle suffer from mood swings and it also increases their risk for anxiety, this is obviously because you are not fitting in enough.
  • You should stand up at least every 20 minutes, this causes your knees to perform its activity. Engage in conversations while standing, pick calls also.

  • Go for a run, a recent study found that running for as little as 5 to 10 minutes per day at slow speeds was associated with significantly reduced risks of death from all cause and from cardiovascular disease. In some parts of our country, especially states that are so populated like Lagos, Port-harcourt, Abuja where there are a lot of businesses, you can take a run while boarding a bus, and others.

  • You should eat less of junks food, sedentary lifestyle increases the rate of obesity.

  • You can run your errands yourself while at work, especially when the errands is within your place of work.

  •  Take a walk while commercials are going on on the television set, and if you are basically into the online business, you can walk around the house carrying your laptop or tablets.

In summary, sedentary lifestyle has a greater risk than its good, you can still live healthy, yet having this lifestyle. We all know health is wealth, your state of health determines your productivity. You can manage your lifestyle by doing the above.
